Harriet Wilkes was hired in Coney Island Hospital as a Nurses Aide in 1964 and worked in the Labor and Delivery unit. After several years of devoted service, her keen interest and commitment to her patients enkindled in her the desire to pursue a meaningful career in nursing - a career that would benefit both patients and staff collectively.
Over a period of years, Harriet Wilkes accomplished her goals by first enrolling in a LPN program and graduated as a licensed practical nurse. As an LPN she graced the medical-surgical units with her expertise for 2 ½ years, before returning to the Maternal Child Health Dept., where she has functioned expertly and continuously up to the present.
The call for competence, maintaining personal and professional growth has led Harriet Wilkes to Staten Island College. There, she pursued her Associate degree in Nursing and graduated as a Registered Nurse after fulfilling the New York State requirement. Harriet Wilkes has gone over and above the call of duty by the contribution she has made to her clients/staff of Coney Island Hospital. Her commitment to patients, family and community has been demonstrated by her care and concern to everyone that enters Coney Island Hospital. She collaborates with other health care professionals and public agencies to meet the health care needs of the patients. Harriet Wilkes has always been available when called upon. She willingly gives of herself and her personal time to meet the needs of the patients. Harriet Wilkes is a member of ANA and NYSNA.
