Imelda Jean, RN, BSN
Assistant Head Nurse

Imelda Jean, RN, BSN is an experienced critical care nurse, who was motivated from her childhood to become a nurse.

Ms. Jean originally migrated from her native-land Haiti many years ago to Canada before coming to the United States. She graduated from Washington Irving High School in 1980 and continued her education at NYC Technical College. Ms. Jean initially pursued a career in secretarial and computer studies. Ms. Jean stated that while she was at work she kept hearing “do nursing.” One day, when it became over whelming, she responded to the call by registering in the Nursing Program at N.Y.C. technical College. She admitted that it was difficult, but she was determined to realize her dream. When asked why it meant so much to her, she replied “I wanted to help people.”

In 1986 when Ms. Jean graduated with an AAS degree in nursing, she joined KCHC. She began her nursing career on the Med/surgical units. While working in Med/Surg, she continued her education and in 1990, she obtained her BSN, Magna Cum Laude from Medgar Evers College.

Ms. Jean was eager to save lives and felt that she needed to transfer to the Critical Care Unit. She prepared herself for the challenge and successfully completed the Critical Care Course and ACLS.

In 1990 Ms. Jean joined the Critical Care Team in the Neurological and Surgical service,
where she works presently. She was promoted to Assistant Head Nurse in 2004.

Ms. Jean goes above and beyond the call of duty. She is a valuable, nurturing and experienced nurse in the units. She is a preceptor and mentor for new nurses.

Ms. Jean feels that it is important to work as a team giving the patients the physical and emotional care they need; she actively participates in unit rounds with the Interdisciplinary Teams.

Ms. Jean is a strong advocate for her patients and staff. She is most proud of the times she has been able to help the patients cope with their illnesses and maintain a sense of self-worth independence and a better quality life.
