New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation
Joins in the Celebration of National Nurses Week
May 6- May 12, 2005

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) is indebted to its nurses for their dedication to the provision of high quality, safe patient care, and their leadership role in continuous performance improvement throughout our public hospital system.

This year's theme "Nurses: Many Roles, One Profession" acknowledges the diverse roles performed by our nurses throughout HHC and the broader healthcare system. Here at HHC, nurses practice in the home, in outpatient settings, in inpatient units, in operating suites, in emergency rooms, throughout behavioral health, on the correctional health barge, and in many other venues. Nurses are highly skilled to perform an array of services in an increasingly complex, technology-rich health care environment.

In addition to their clinical skill, nurses bring the human touch to patient care. Across HHC, nurses are the Heart and Soul of our patient care delivery system and reflect New York City's rich ethnic and cultural diversity. Every minute of every day, an HHC nurse brings a smile, solves a problem, eases a pain, lends an ear, and makes a special difference in a patient's life. Your dedication, hard work, professionalism and compassion help make HHC the exceptional healthcare system that it is.

We take this opportunity to say what too often goes unsaid... Thank you for everything that you do for our patients and thank you for caring so much.

To Our Nursing Staff Top

Dear Nursing Staff,

On behalf of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, we would like to commend you on your professionalism, dedication and commitment in the service of our patients and to the communities that we serve.

As we address the many external challenges the health care industry and the nursing profession face, it is essential we celebrate the essence of Nursing - the "Heart of Health Care". Nurses provide comfort, support and compassion at some of the most trying times for our patients and families, in a variety of roles and practice settings.

This year Nursing has experienced many successes and were involved in several projects throughout HHC. "Creating a Culture for Nurse Retention", was an all day symposium presented at the Greater New York Health Care Association. Nurses participated in the HANYs Nurse Satisfaction Project at Queens Hospital Center. The first Magnet survey is underway at Elmhurst Hospital Center. Sea View Hospital and Rehabilitation Center on Staten Island submitted their Magnet Application for Long Term Care. Nurse Leaders participated in the Incentive for a Competitive Brooklyn. This task force developed an action plan to address the Nursing Faculty shortage. Nursing was represented on the national level at the IT Summit and National Nursing Workforce Panels for Home Care, Long Term and Acute Care. Many nursing affiliates, both locally, out-of -state, and internationally, are requesting clinical placements at HHC facilities. These are a few examples of the results of your tireless commitment, dedication, and service to Nursing on your quest for excellence.

Congratulations, Happy Nurses Week and thank you for your contributions to patient care.

Sincerely,
